Pope John preschool reading successes - Technology for early childhood ˆ Back to Top

The four-year-old students in the Pope John XXIII Preschool participated this year in a brand-new emergent literacy program called “Happily Ever After.” It included wonderful classic fairy tale read-alouds and activities to build letter recognition and letter-sound correspondence as a way to prepare for kindergarten and for first grade reading.

In May all these students were given the MRT6 Level I, a standardized test to assess their knowledge. We are very proud to share with the community that these students were very successful and are very ready for continued success in kindergarten. Out of 25 students tested, 18 scored in the above average for Beginning Reading and 16 scored in the above average category for Pre-reading Skills. No students scored below average.

We are very proud of these early successes and look forward to continued progress by this group of students.

Technology for early childhood

Teachers and students will be very excited about the new Mac I-Pods that have arrived and will become part of the instruction for our pre-schoolers, kindergarteners and first-graders. Twenty Mac I-Pods will make it possible for a teacher to do a whole class lesson on a specific math or reading skill using the multitude of educational software games loaded on these special Mac I-Pods. The students will be introduced to these Mac I-Pods in computer class, then the teachers will be able to sign these out for classroom and learning center use.

“Green Thumb” or want to be? Dig into Pope John XXIII School’s “Get Up and Grow Committee” this Spring ˆ Back to Top

By Lori Walsh Edwards

Pope John XXIII School’s Get Up and Grow Committee is a group of parents dedicated to the enrichment of our students’ lives and the betterment of our school through improvements to outdoor gathering spaces, campus and building entrances, student play lot amenities as well as the overall landscape and school gardens.

Toward this goal, over the past four years, we have:

  • Prepared a longterm comprehensive campus landscape master plan identifying campus improvement projects.
  • Enhanced our school’s Washington street entry by creating an arrival terrace constructed of donated black slate featuring park benches, lush landscaping and seasonally rotated container plantings.
  • Installed a heavy duty bike rack capable of accommodating 15 to 20 student bicycles.
  • Commissioned vibrant banners for installation across our campus and along major streets to increase the school’s visibility and community presence.
  • Given a clearer identity to the pre-school, gymnasium, chapel and the social hall through the installation of architectural canvas awnings at key entries.
  • Placed additional park benches and seasonal container plantings at the school’s south entry to increase seating opportunities and beautify a previously stark entrance.
  • Relocated unsightly garbage and recycling bins away from the play lot to less visible parts of the campus.
  • Planted hundreds of shrubs, groundcovers and perennials to beautify the pre-school, kindergarten wing and main building entry.
  • Raised funds through a sale of Pope John blend of bulbs to arrange for the planting of two 30 foot tall hybrid elm trees to provide shade for the play lot as well as for classrooms and administrative offices (pictured, above).
  • Created educational vegetable gardens for classroom and individual student benefit.
  • Coordinated the activities of parent and student volunteers on seasonal workdays in achieving our overall school and campus improvement goals in accordance with the campus master plan.

At this time, the Get Up and Grow needs volunteers for a variety of activities:

  • People to help with watering of the property during the summer (one week commitments).
  • Gardeners with ideas and interests in expanding a vegetable garden.
  • Individuals, clubs or organizations with experience in green ideas for schools such as solar panels, semi-permeable con-crete and “green” roofs.
  • Individuals with experience and talent in grant searching and grant writing.
  • Donations of plant material, mulch and lawn bags.

Come join us in any way you can!
