Lent 2010

Return to God with Your Whole Heart

Fasting and Abstinence

Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are obligatory days of universal fast and abstinence. Fasting is obligatory for all who have completed their 18th year and have not yet reached their 60th year. Fasting allows a person to eat one full meal. Two smaller meals may be taken, not to equal one full meal. Abstinence (from meat) is obligatory for all who have reached their 14th year.

If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (on Holy Saturday night) as the "paschal fast" to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection.

Fridays in Lent are obligatory days of complete abstinence (from meat) for all who have completed their 14th year.

Participate in Operation Rice Bowl

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday. As part of our community’s observance of Lent, we ask all families to participate in Catholic Relief services’ Operation Rice Bowl, a program of prayer, fasting, learning and giving.

Please be sure to take home a Rice Bowl packet and follow this simple yet powerful Lenten practice. Open up the bowl and place it on your dining room table, kitchen counter, to remind you of the needs of so many people in the world for food and water. Make a conscious effort to donate all or a portion of the money you save by your Lenten sacrifices or empty your change into it every night throughout Lent. Then, convert all that change into bills or write one check, put it into the special ORB envelope and drop it in the collection basket on Holy Thursday or at any of the masses on Easter Sunday.
